Ok here we go... Got a lot in over the past couple of weeks. I'll start by saying I picked up Chessmaster and Tazmania for the SNES, and Basketball and Real Sports Football for the 2600. I don't have pics for these, but I only paid 8 dollars total for all the games, with the SNES titles going for 3 dollars a piece. This was from a retro gaming store I frequent too, so this was really a surprise bargain for me. Next up is a trade I did on the Atari IO forums, this one with Ballblazer: Next up is a trade I did with RickR on Atari IO: And last I bought this from Phil the No Swear Gamer:

Great episode, wish I wouldn't have procrastinated on submitting my feedback! I did play this on my PSP, and I got bored with it fairly quickly. Great graphics and sounds for a 2600 title though, so it's difficult to be too harsh on this one. I definitely don't think this game is worth the price it commands, and I'm going to have difficulty dropping the money on it as part of completing my 2600 collection.
Looking forward to next week's episode; I got my butt in gear and submitted my feedback already. Keystone Kapers was a childhood favorite for me, and I'm looking forward to the episode.

I finally got a 2600 emulator running on my PSP, it's decent, but I dunno, something about a portable unit dedicated to Atari only stuff just appeals to me for some reason. Seems silly when they didn't include anything that works close to a paddle controller though; why not include a small knob to use for paddle games? I find the touch screen works ok, not great but ok for Activision Anthology on my iPhone, and the stylus control on the Atari Greatest Hits on the DS is also better than a dpad.
I did manage to snag an NES Mini at a Best Buy; got in line 45 minutes before open, and I was number 22 of the 26 that they got in. It was the number one thing on my daughter's wish list for Christmas if you can believe that?
Got some pickups I got from trades over on the Atari.io forms; once they come in I'll share. Best item is a boxed (no manual) copy of Defender II! It'll be nice to play that one again; I played it a lot when I was a kid.

I tried playing the Famicom version for giggles last night, only to find that there's a lame climbing stick controller you need to play the freaking game! I'll try the Atari one on my PSP this week and hopefully get some feedback into the podcast... Been too long since I've submitted any.

My latest pickups; got them from two different people on the AtariAge Marketplace on FB. Atari games were from one seller, and Beamrider for Coleco was from another. Still trying to get my hands on the 2600 version of Beamrider... Oink has a pretty much non-existent end label, but the seller ended up throwing it in for free once I said I didn't want it, so I took it. I've been trying to do more business with individuals to pickup games and less on eBay; even if I only save a few dollars, it still helps them and helps me when we cut out the middleman.

Defender II / Stargate continues to elude me... I had it and played it as a kid, so the nostalgia is there for me, but I can't drop eBay prices on it for some reason. I keep hoping to see a copy at one of the retro stores in the area at some point. is it really an expensive game? i got all three of those games for a fiver (with the UK economy as it is after the brexit shambles, that prolli equates to about 20 cents US)... actually, i only paid for two of the games, the guy ended up sending me the Space Eagle cart for free after taking so long to post the others... but i'm with you totally on "retro" prices, i refuse to pay over the odds just cos some dude on ebay has an inflated BIN price, if a game's genuinely rare then i'll happily do without the real thing and play it on a flash cart or hack an old cart with an eprom instead... i stopped drinking alcohol when i was in my mid 20's, so the way i look at it is this... if i can buy a single game for less than the price of a pint then even if i only play it once or twice i'm still getting the same (if not better) price per hour enjoyment ratio that i would have gotten from the booze... and i have the added advantage of having another physical object that i can leave for someone to be annoyed about after i peg it... It's going for about 13-16 for a loose cart on eBay, so not super expensive but not typical Atari cart prices either. I'm kind of hoping to snag a copy in the 5-6 dollar range. That was a heck of a deal on the carts you got; with the current exchange rate that's equal to 6.80 USD! Nice score!

By the way, was really tempted to pick up a copy of Gremlins at one of the retro stores I go to; only wanted 25 for it. I have trouble dropping that much money on n Atari game though, especially when there's so many others to be had for a dollar or two.

(dunno if this topic belongs here, but if uncle ferg wants to move it then i'm more than happy for it to find a better home) i always like seeing what new game related things people are getting, so please post yours... anyway, Postie delivered these for me today... I don't have pics at the moment, but I did pick up Lost Luggage, Beany Bopper, Super Challenge Baseball, Super Challenge Football, Real Sports Football, and Space Attack, all for 9 dollars total. Got them more for collecting than playing I'll admit, but I'll probably give them all a try at some point. I watched Phil's review of Lost Luggage on YouTube last night, and it looks kind of fun.

My daughter and I did some Halloween gaming on my 7800 last night. The first title we played was Ghostbusters! I know this game (and most of the Activision versions of this game, NES, SMS, etc) gets a bit of a bad wrap for being repetitive, boring, etc, and to some degree that's justified. However, my daughter and I absolutely love hearing the Ghostbusters theme slightly off tune, and graphically speaking this game looks amazing on the 2600. We got a bit further than we normally do last night; reading the manual helped. I never realized you have to flip the right difficulty switch to bait the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man, and that you have to flip the switch BEFORE he appears on the screen. That's a tough task on the 7800 as well with the way the switches are positioned, but I did manage to do it on time once. We still ended up losing on the first round, and ended up quitting after we both gave it a couple of tries, but it was fun and we enjoyed it overall. Playing that game is definitely a Halloween tradition for us!
Next up was Ghost Manor. I had written in about this one to the podcast, and at that point I wasn't able to ever make it past the axe wielding skeleton at the gate. Last night though I finally beat the game with both difficulty switches on B. My daughter was cheering me on and was quite excited when the girl rescued the boy! Side note: with no color/bw switch on the 7800, it looks like this game defaults to the girl character, with no way to select the boy character.
After that we played some Haunted House. We had the living room kind of dark and the sound up a bit, and my daughter jumped a few times as we played the game when the various creatures surprised her :-) A week or so ago I had her play the first difficult level on the Flashback, and she was able to beat it. This time, we went to difficulty two. She lost most of her lives, but she was able to beat it on her first try, which really surprised me! It never ceases to amaze me how much fun and suspense Haunted House still has when played today.
Demons to Diamonds was next. We played a couple rounds and my daughter had fun, but ultimately wanted to play something else. It reminded me how frustrating this game can be sometimes, especially when an opposite color demon spawns right in front of you when you're taking a shot at a diamond or a demon of your own color.
The last Halloween themed game we played was Ms Pac Man (7800 version because it's nearly arcade perfect). My daughter was super proud of herself when she got to the third level! Her Pac Man skills have definitely improved, and I find the key is to give hints here or there, but to let her try strategies out on her own to see what works. I got to the fifth level and died like I do 90% of the time on the 7800 version; it just gets too fast for me at that point I guess. I think I've gotten to level six or seven a couple of times, but it's rare.
We finished out the evening with some Kool Aid Man and Tron Deadly Discs. Not Halloween themed, but still fun games. All in all it was an enjoyable Sunday night of Atari fun!
What are some of your Halloween favorites on Atari consoles? Would love to hear about them :-)

Castlevania Rondo of Blood and Super Castlevania IV soundtracks; must listen to around Halloween for me! this is the 2nd time today i've heard mention of both these games... they were featured in the most recent Stone Age Gamer podcast that i was listening to earlier I just listened to those episodes as well! It was my first time listening to their podcast too, and they left a good impression on me overall. One of the hosts seems like he's trying to drop F bombs for effect; maybe he really does talk like that, but it seems like he's trying too hard? Minor gripe though, the show is pretty good.

Something in the Goldbergs didn't sit right with me when I watched it. I think it's the ping-ponging of cultural references that bothers me, it tries too hard to be all 80s, all the time. Stranger Things really captured the 80s vibe I guess by not hitting you over the head with it. Still, I always like when classic games are on current TV shows, so I'll watch it eventually. That is one big complaint I have with the Goldbergs as well; it's always 1980 something which gives them carte blanche to use whatever 80's reference they want wherever they want independent of the overall show timeline. I get why they did it, but it's still irritating at times to see late 80's stuff on an earlier show and vice versa.

I am a huge Goldbergs fan! I usually watch an episode or two a week on Hulu; the humor and nostalgia that show has is just so great. I haven't seen the episode you're referring to yet, but I will have to skip ahead and check it out. I'm a third of the way through season 3 right now.

Welcome Shinto, love your stories! I haven't had a chance to listen to the Jag podcast yet, and part of me is afraid to because I already want a Jaguar quite badly, and hearing someone talk about the games might propel me to purchase one...
