More influential than he probably ever knew, more galvanizing as a session leader than Spector or Wilson probably ever admitted to him, and more inspiring as a man than any of today’s desperately arrogant braggarts. I like to think of his epitaph as his rousing call to the other musicians before many an eavesdropped session in the Pet Sounds box: "Come on, people -- let’s cut this record one time!" --- "I was never a solo artist. I wasn't a Buddy Rich. I'll tell you a story, though. Milt Holland, the percussionist, and I were working years ago at World Pacific Jazz Records. I got a call for a Kathy Rich session. That was Buddy Rich's daughter. I said, 'Wow!' Buddy produced it, and he was real sweet. I was getting into my car after the last session when Milt Holland came running up to me and said, 'Listen, Hal -- Buddy would never say this to you, but I want you to know what he said.' Milt had gone up to Buddy before that and asked, 'Hey, Buddy, how come you're not playing drums on your kid's album?' Buddy said, 'I wanted the best.'" Hal Blaine 1929-2019
