This might be a sensitive subject, but I'd like some feedback from those who purchased and retained their Flashback Portable.
You see, I am an audiophile. And because this is a text forum, I cannot make the MP3 joke - or I can, but it won't really work.
Anyway, I am quite obsessive when it comes to sound, and the sounds generated by the 2600 are very precise. Obviously I cannot reproduce them here, but I know exactly what it sounds like to run a round of Dodge 'Em with no players, I can hear the throbbing drone of Yars' Revenge in my mind, and I can sing the Pitfall II music in its exact key.
You're thinking, "Wow.. you should be on America's Got Talent <rolling eyes>"
No, I know - it's not especially impressive, but it IS the way I'm wired.
I say all that to say this: I was extremely skeptical of the ability of the Flashback Portable to accurately and faithfully recreate the exact experience of playing a 2600 in your hands. I've been burned by emulators and knockoffs too many times in the past.
Well, eventually, with everyone raving about how great it was and how convenient to finally play all these games we love anywhere we go, I finally broke down and purchased one.
As I held it in my hands, I could not restrain my excitement - I released all my reservations and fully embraced the hope of playing Atari everywhere I go.
I fired up "Dodge 'Em" and my heart was immediately broken. It is several tones too low; it sounds drunk.
"Yars'" and "Pitfall II" were equally inaccurate and soul-crushing.
I promptly returned my unit.
Now, I know nobody is as neurotic as me (God forbid), especially with something as specific as sound; but has anyone else even noticed that the sound isn't quite right? I haven't heard anyone say anything about it.
Anyway, thanks for letting me vent.
Sorry I'm so weird.
