Well, more like venting. I don't really rant, especially in my old age. I'm almost as old as some of you, maybe older in some cases, but we're all basically from the same era/generation. I got my 2600 when I was 8 in 1981. I know I played it long before that & before that, played many a Pong clone on random TVs. I dabbled with the Intellivision (yuck, but just seeing those controllers causes waves of nostalgia to wash over me.) From there it was on to the NES, then the Genesis, N64, PS1, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox 360, Wii (YUCK!) & finally Xbox One. Somehow, I'm able to enjoy all the wonderful things that come along with modern gaming (EPIC stories & gameplay, graphics that blow my mind & the ability to play games with buddies who are not sitting next to me on the floor in front of the TV) while still appreciating all of the good things that led up to where we are today. I see Facebook posts, tweets, Instagrams, etc. from retro games constantly bashing modern games. Why? I don't understand why theirs hatred towards modern gaming? Believe me, as someone with a horrible internet connection, I am often inconvenienced by having to download either the game or an update (I have my Xbox set to download updates automatically so usually I never notice) and the costs involved. (Although, adjusting for inflation, I don't think things are too bad.) Microtransactions are ridiculous, but guess what? I don't buy them, so they don't really affect me. Some of my best video gaming memories stem from games I've played in the past ten years, including right now. (OMG, PUBG!!!) But, I don't think I would appreciate what I have today if I didn't love all the games I've played in the previous thirty years. Venting over.

StormSurge,
I agree with your except I stayed with PlayStation because of a love hate relationship I have with Microsoft. I think people don't like the modern games because of the time involved to play them. I just finished uncharted 4 on the PS4 and it took me probably 20 plus hours as opppsed to the pickup and play of space invaders or PAC man. I also think people just need something to bitch about and are only fad followers. I think true old school gamers are like you and I will always collect/play every system we can and find things we love and hate on all of them. Damn you flicker. We have a love with being able to watch as the systems grow as we grow into older kids. These negative types don't appreciate where we came from and where we are going. Imagine a full vr verision of adventure. Right now the fad is retro games and we see that in the price of the original games and hardware plus all the new old systems. It will pass and the really gamers will still be around to carry on as these fad followers move the next fad and we get to enjoy the things we have always love.
Just my two nickels as Canada no longer uses pennies
Cheers, Magoo

I think (like you say) people just like to moan. Most of the time it's 'tongue in cheek' anyway. I moan to my older son about modern games but the truth is that I like all games to a certain extent. I just don't have the time to put into them anymore. That's one of the reasons I like the pick-up-and-play element of Atari 2600. And obviously because as we age we become less mentally flexible and prefer cosy nostalgia

See, the time needed for some games is a draw for me.
I don't watch a lot of TV, current TV at least. I mean, I'm going to start my sixth rewatch of The Wire soon, I'll tune in for Seinfeld or Barney Miller reruns whenever possible, but aside from a Ken Burns run on PBS, my current day TV viewing is limited to the NFL.
I like to read books, although I've slowed down in that department. So the majority of my entertainment comes from playing games.
A game like Fallout 3 or any of the new Wolfensteins, take some time to get through the story. A game like Skyrim or any Assassin's Creed can take much longer if you choose to do all the side quests. I'm an achievement junkie (there's a post for another day) so more often than not, I'm spending significant time playing these games.
I don't have that much free time. I have to wake up early most days, so I try to go to bed early. So finding time for these types of games can be a challenge. But to me, that's MY issue, not the game's issue.
There are many days when I don't feel like committing to spending two hours exploring or finishing a mission. On those days, I'll fire up an old-school game or games to keep me busy for an hour or so.
Also, the current game du jour, PUBG, has matches that can last 30 seconds to 30 minutes, depending on several factors. That game has that all important, "okay, just ONE more round before bed" factor.
I totally agree with you both about the jumping on the bandwagon aspect of complaining about something. E.T. is the perfect example.

I think any hatred I have toward modern games is all the first person perspective that has permeated modern games. I get motion sick from FP games, and so that tends to limit a lot of what I can play. Luckily a lot of developers still offer third person perspective either as the only option or a selectable option, so that has helped me be able to play some of the modern stuff. I’m working on beating the Uncharted series on PS3, and I have also played Order 1886 on PS4 and been enjoying it. Dragon Age 3, the Mass Effect series (except Andromeda, that one has not drawn me in) all great games on 360 and Xbox One that I’ve enjoyed. I’m also really digging the new Mario and Zelda games on Switch; Nintendo knocked it out of the park yet again!
I am one of those people that groans when I fire up the Xbox or the PS4 and see the update required screen, because if I’m using those systems it means I have some time to devote to a longer title, and all those updates do is eat into that time I have available. I probably should leave the systems in standby and let them auto download, but I only have an 8mb down connection, and if I’m trying to stream something and one of the consoles decides to download something, it’s annoying. Luckily I have enough stuff to play, so I just switch to something else when that happens, and move on, but I have been known to tout how all my retro stuff just works, no updates required :-)
I love the fact that indie developers are taking the retro craze and running with it too. It’s great to see 2D platformers making a comeback, and seeing a new point and click adventure game like Thimbleweed Park was awesome!
That being said, any snobbery from either side is just uncalled for. Play what you enjoy and what you have time for. Video games in the end are about what entertains you and the people you play with or share them with, and the more opinions and discussion without purist nonsense the better.

I have enjoyed the many modern games I have purchased from my PS4 but, to be honest, I am annoyed by all the "update" stuff that has to happen. Just like starbuck66, the updates just into the time that I do have to finally spend the time to play any of those games that require extra time.

StormSurge - apparently you and I are the same age and got our 2600's the same year.
I kept up with modern gaming for a long time, but sort of burnt out on it a few years ago. I haven't bought a console from this generation, and don't plan to. Time is definitely a factor. I just couldn't find time in my schedule to fit in the time required to complete the games anymore. However, I can pick up and play a game like Popeye in fun little short stints.
Then there's the factor that many of the games are simply rehashed versions of the the previous games. (How many Call of Dutys have there been? And sports games have been this way for years!) I used to love the Halo series, but just not interested in playing another version anymore.
And, more than I want to admit, at this point in my life, the nostalgia has a lot to do with why I spend so much time on Atari related things.
That said, I still see the appeal of modern games, and can certainly see how someone could really enjoy them. Just not me - at least not at this time. (Well, maybe Cuphead)
It's all how much leisure time you have and how you want to invest it. I found it interesting how you pointed out how little modern TV you anymore, because I feel like there is so much good TV out there these days. Way more than I could possibly watch. If you have access to Netflix, and don't have an aversion to horror elements, do yourself a favor and check out Stranger Things.

Thanks Troff! Yes, I have watched both seasons of Stranger Things & loved it. I do still watch TV, but would rather play games. Cuphead is unrelenting! I stink at games & I think that was a poor decision purchasing that. It looks great but I cannot make any headway.
