I recently saw this book on a post and picked up the paperback version that same day. Read through it in a couple of sittings and it actually inspired me to go and play a few of them for a bit. I really liked the format. I hope he writes a few more on other 2600 categories.

Reading this months Retro Gamer Magazine I discovered two really fun prototype games licensed to 20th Century Fox by Bally Sente (a company created by ex-Atari coin-op engineers and purchased by Nolan Bushnell). These are really unique well done high energy 2600 titles, sad that they never made it to cartridge form. Check them out if you haven't tried them. Meltdown & Lasercade. You can find the ROMS on Atari Age. John

Ferg, I enjoyed the news update! Looks like a whole new batch of Atari fans may in our future. You noticed my two games weren't on this years Flashback 8's, thanks for noticing. The inside scoop is that they licensed it for only the years spanning from 2013 thru 2016. This was a deal they had with 'Good Deal Games', authorized by myself and another author who's set of games also appeared on them, 'Good Deal Games' AKA Homebrew Heaven was the vendor that put them out on cartridge back in 2009. I did enjoy the nerd credit for being on them, but I'm kind of relieved since they kept using the same old broken emulator which causes a scoring display bug. Nukey Shea fixed them both so they can be downloaded from the AtariAge forum for Flashback Portable hacks and played on the current Flashback. If they keep putting them on the market year after year, I hope that they'll at least license a better emulator like Stella. For me, the portable as broken as it is, was still a must have for the games that did work, and the SD card support... Like you, I had a Flashback 2 and probably wouldn't have purchased any others until the ones with my own games on them came out. I'm not planning on purchasing a future one unless it the TV version starts to support the SD card (like the portable) and uses better emulation, it would be very close to paring the original console with a harmony cart! I'd also gladly purchase another portable if they upgraded it with a better emulator.

Once you enter, look around to the left, they have a shelf near the floor, near this you should see some blue storage tubs overflowing with them, and another batch around back of the cashier counter in the glass case.

I think I mentioned in one of Ferg's podcasts last year about "The Place" in Cincinnati that closed down last year. Willie had been there a few times and featured them on Arcade USA. Anyway, its a shame that they close down, and it was not for financial reasons. All indications is that the business was booming, but Cary, the owner, could not get any time with his family. So that is understandable. Here's their old website: theplaceretroarcade.weebly.com/Now, Cincinnati has two barcades and then there is one in the nothern 'burbs in a dead mall called Arcade Legacy. Supposedly, Bass Pro and Arcade Legacy are the only reasons people go to this dead mall. www.arcadelegacyohio.com/Arcade legacy also has a large selection of loose Atari 2600 carts (mostly common ones). It's a good place start a collection if you're planning on owning a Retron 77!

Hope you like it. I think it captures the spirit of the game-play from the original Odyssey 2 game. John

Updated Hand Pick Hank to version 20170415. I'm not planning additional changes unless a game breaking bug is found.

thanks for sharing john, i've downloaded the file, but i'll be saving it for the weekend so i can re-acquaint myself with the videopac cart before i play yours properly via harmony... i did check it out quickly on your site though, it looks like you kept the gameplay intact... the only real difference i could see at a glance was that you'd changed the alternating / stepped platforms to a symmetrical layout, which completely makes sense for the vcs... i'm looking forward to spending some time with it... cheers Thanks, please get the latest version. (see original post, I have attached the newest version) I hope you enjoy it! You'll find the videopack version has more boulders and they move in more directions. Also my version only allows jumping, no diving like the original. Just couldn't get everything to fit in 4K including some climbing and falling animations which looked pretty cool, but ultimately, I had to make compromises that distilled things down to the basic elements of what made the game fun. I may do an 8K version in the future.

Regarding the special remastered edition of Episode 2, Combat. Ferg is a confirmed soothsayer!! He predicted: - a "coffee table book based on the early artwork of Atari games", CHECK. - a "handheld version of the Atari Flashback", CHECK And how wonderful was it to hear Strudders & Mini-Strudders first appearance, complete with a "back in the youknowwhat". Fantastic as always Ferg! Thanks for sharing! I was thinking the same thing! Glad you pointed it out!

Great episode. The link given is a real life changer for guys like me who like to tinker with software: 8bitworkshop.comI just put the companion book on my wish list! If you can't afford the book there is always the trusty Stella Programming Guide By Steve Wright: atarihq.com/danb/files/stella.pdfFor a real kick, grab the source from one of the games here and modify it any way you want! www.qotile.net/minidig/John
