Let's talk about Scrabble. I know our intrepid leader LOVES Scrabble & I believe he mentioned on the podcast that he competes weekly. I HATE Scrabble. I love board games of all shapes & sizes, with the exception of Scrabble. I consider myself a person of average or slightly above average intellect. I'm no super-nerd but I can hold my own in Jeopardy! & crossword puzzles. Scrabble annoys me to no end. I'm not sure what it is exactly but being horrible at it doesn't help. For the life of me, I struggle to make the most basic of words.. One thing I can pinpoint are the ridiculous rules. No proper names? That's some BS right there. Anyway, I just thought this would be an interesting discussion. I'm guessing I'm in the minority.

I don't actually hate Scrabble, but I'm not good at it either. I'm not sure what it is about it, but I just don't have the patience to roll the letters around in my head over and over to determine what the "best" word to play is, what will get the most points by taking advantage of double & triple word scores, etc. I just want to pick my word and move on.
Maybe I've just played too much Space Invaders - no time to determine which Invader is the "best" to shoot - just shoot them all - quickly!!

i love scrabble... it's one of my "go to" games for playing in the bath (DS) i played it loads when i was a kid, i've always had a fascination with words and i think the game compliments and encourages that... although, saying that, i will frequently sacrifice points in order to use the crude & the rude, that gives me so much more pleasure than winning...

I play every week with my friend Don, he devised a number of different rule sets for Scrabble which turns it more into a vocabulary game, rather than a memorization game. He has many Scrabble pages on his web site, this is the rule set that we play every week. www.donaldsauter.com/scrabble-iii-introduction.htm
