because i drive for a living i can go through 6 or 7 hours of podcasts a day, and although i have a large number of podcasts i subscribe to, i sometimes need a change of aural delights... the audiobook...
in all honesty, i was listening to audiobooks on tape, and even radioplays downloaded from usenet, for a long time before the ipod was invented... but most of my time is spent with podcasts because itunes does all the hard work for me... but whenever i buy a new book, i always go off and steal the audio version so i can read it while i work...
here's a lil list of books i'd like to recommend... starting with the book i last read, and followed by a random selection...
John Scalzi - Fuzzy Nation - read by Wil Weaton... as was Red Shirts, another Scalzi book
Ernest Cline - Ready Player One - also read by Wil Weaton... look, if Weaton reads it, then i can recommend you listening to it
JK Rowling -Harry Potter series - if you want Voldemort pronounced correctly then listen to the americanised Jim Dale readings, otherwise go for the Stephen Fry readings, he reads the ones JK wrote, not the edited american books with the wrong titles
Douglas Adams - EVERYTHING! - be sure to search out the ones that are actually read by Adams... as a side note, the BBC made radio play versions of both Dirk Gently books, with Harry Enfield playing Dirk, they are an absolute joy to the ears, lots of nods to the HHGG radio series in there too, wonderful stuff!
Terry Pratchett - EVERYTHING! - the discworld stuff is obvious, but don't let the early scifi and things like Truckers slip you by... most of the early discworld stuff had two audio versions, be sure to go for the unabridged books read by Nigel Planer, he will always be the voice of Rincewind to me...
that's it for now, i'm sure i will add more as i read more...
share and enjoy!
